Polonnaruwa was established as the capital after Anuradhapura had been invaded in the late 10th century. Bahirawakanda Temple Rising up above the Kandy town it is just 2 km from the temple of the sacred tooth relic. The name “Bahirawa Kanda” means the gnome mountain.
